A murderer dubbed the ‘womb raider’ has been executed in the US after strangling a mum-to-be to death and cutting out her unborn child with a knife.

Lisa Montgomery, the only woman on federal death row, died at 1.31am (local time) after receiving the lethal injection at the federal prison complex in Terre Haute, Indiana.

It is the first execution of a woman in the United States for almost 70 years.

Refusing to give any last words, Montgomery answered ‘no’ in a quiet, muffled voice when a female executioner asked her if she wanted to say anything just before her death.

It comes after the US Supreme Court overturned a judge’s decision to postpone the execution on mental health grounds.

Kelley Henry, Montgomery’s lawyer called the pending execution “vicious, unlawful, and unnecessary exercise of authoritarian power”.

“The craven bloodlust of a failed administration was on full display tonight,” Ms Henry said.

“Everyone who participated in the execution of Lisa Montgomery should feel shame.

“No one can credibly dispute Mrs. Montgomery’s longstanding debilitating mental disease – diagnosed and treated for the first time by the Bureau of Prisons’ own doctors.”

Montgomery, born in Kansas, killed 23-year-old Bobbie Jo Stinnett, then eight months pregnant, in the mum-to-be’s home in Skidmore, Missouri, in 2004.

She then cut out the victim’s unborn baby and tried to pass the child off as her own, however she was arrested shortly afterwards.

The baby, Victoria Jo, survived the attack and is now 16-years-old.

Montgomery had told others she was pregnant before the killing, despite being sterilised in an operation which she claimed she was pressured into by her mum.

Her ex-husband filed for custody of two of her children prior to the murder and threatened to expose her pregnancy lies.

Her trial heard that she needed a baby to support her claims.

She was found guilty by a jury in 2007 and sentenced to death.

Some of Ms Stinnett’s relatives have traveled to witness Montgomery’s execution, the Justice Department said.

Montgomery’s lawyers asked for Trump’s clemency last week, saying she committed her crime after a childhood in which she was abused and repeatedly raped by her stepfather and his friends, and so should instead face life in prison.

It is one of three executions the US Department of Justice had scheduled for the final full week of President Donald Trump’s administration.

Two other executions scheduled for Thursday and Friday have been delayed, for now at least, by a federal judge in Washington, to allow them to recover from Covid-19.
