Netflix’s series imagines the consequence of this endeavor: a manned mission to Mars. Also, as the series logline reads, “an epic love story and a thrilling tale of survival.”
The series was initially ordered for 10 episodes and with a budget likely over $6 million per episode, though the numbers haven’t yet been released. (It’s possible the series was even more expensive than the streaming service’s other sci-fi properties like Stranger Things and Altered Carbon.)

So far, Netflix has not yet announced plans for a second season.
Still, with such high production costs and a Labor Day weekend release, Away doesn’t seem like the sort of series Netflix will leave out in space. (Especially when the story’s 3-year mission is only partly complete; there’s still lots of drama left to be had.)
The streaming service is likely awaiting viewership numbers before making the call. If the series is brought back for a second season, however, viewers may have to wait more than a year to continue the voyage, given current pandemic-related production challenges.
But hey, it’s a better wait than a three-year Mars mission, right?
What will the second season be about?
Any follow-up season will likely cover the second year of the crew’s mission, which entails Mars exploration, data collection, and the first steps of establishing a permanent settlement. Also, lots of botany. The crew will then need to resupply in preparation for their return voyage. Season 1 strung out the water supply drama for a good five episodes. We have faith season 2 can find plenty of martian yarn to spin.
Back home, there’s also lots of room left for continued melodrama: Lex aging through high school with her new BF, Lu’s unconsummated love, Misha’s voyage for filial forgiveness, and whatever’s going on between Melissa and Matt.
Away could easily turn into a multi-season soap. Expect Netflix turning this one into This Is Us in space.
