See how Twitter reacted to JP Buys’ controversial technical submission win.

JP Buys got to be the final fighter to walk to the cage on this season of Dana White’s Contender Series (DWCS), and while he ended up earning a UFC contract, it didn’t come without controversy by way of a bad referee’s call in his submission win over Jacob Silva.

In the closing seconds of the first round, Buys, after a brilliant display during the first, locked Silva in a tight guillotine choke. Referee Marc Goddard ended up stepping in to wave off the fight, believing that Silva had gone unconscious in the hold.

Silva, however, immediately protested upon the stoppage. He can be heard screaming “I wasn’t asleep!” and “I was breathing!” Goddard, however, stood by his call, continuously waving his arm and telling Silva “It’s over.”

Reactions around the MMA community varied, with some defending Goddard’s actions as looking out for the fighters’ safety, others condemning him for arguably costing Silva a chance to get back in the fight, and more others hoping Goddard didn’t ruin Buys’ UFC contract hopes.

Here are some Twitter reactions to the controversy:

Terrible stoppage. Marc Goddard isn’t looking great these days.

Even though Silva wasn’t out. JP buys should still get a contract…

— #LEARLOCKS (@LEARLOCKS) November 18, 2020

This is bad. No tap, no signs of Silva going out. Marc Goddard is one of the best refs in the world but he has to be better than this, especially in DWCS where these guys are quite literally fighting for their career. Yikes. https://t.co/OhMfELD85L

Marc Goddard is the new Keith Peterson. Come on.

Felder heard snores, so did Buys. Sucks if he wasn’t out, but Goddard has to look out for the health of the fighters.

marc goddard has got to go he’s absolutely terrible

That shit makes it even worse and me even more pissed now that Marc Goddard had the right to call for the cage side official to look at the replay but thought there was no need to? That’s some bullshit #DWCS

JP Buys is class though. Look forward to seeing him in the UFC

Strange stoppage, but hey. JP Buys did it good… That was it.. Thank you all #DWCS

Fortunately for Buys, he still performed well enough to impress UFC President Dana White, earning a UFC deal. He’ll join his wife, Cheyanne Buys, who earned her own deal on DWCS earlier this season, in the UFC.

Buys had previously appeared on season one of DWCS, getting stopped by Joby Sanchez.

DWCS took place on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2020, live from UFC Apex in Las Vegas, NV. Follow along with FanSided for all your live news and highlights.
