This Star Wars Theory Suggests the Mandalorian Is About to Get a Lightsaber
Right at the end of season one of Disney+’s The Mandalorian, it was revealed that bad guy Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) wields a darksaber, a weapon with a long and storied history in the Star Wars mythology. Gideon himself has yet to make a significant appearance in season two of the show, but the darksaber was mentioned by name in the most recent episode, “The Heiress,” by Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff).

The fact that such an important weapon from the franchise’s wider lore got fans speculating about what it could all mean, and a recent YouTube video from the Super Carlin Brothers breaks down one theory which posits that Din Djarin, the titular Mandalorian of the show played by Pedro Pascal, could be about to receive a Jedi lightsaber of his very own.

The logic here is simple: “What’s the point in having just one lightsaber in a Star Wars story? You can’t have much of a lightsaber battle with just one, right?”

While many fans are expecting that Mando will eventually becoming the rightful wielder of the darksaber, that won’t happen unless he prises it from Gideon’s dead hands. And the only way he’ll be able to do that is if he defeats him in some kind of lightsaber duel. Despite the show’s current lack of Jedi, and its focus on telling a singular Western story that falls mostly on the periphery of the events of the movie, would showrunner Jon Favreau have introduced the darksaber if he weren’t gearing up for an epic battle?

Of course, it might not necessarily be Mando who goes up against Gideon and the darksaber; Ahsoka Tano, a popular Jedi character from the animated Star Wars universe, is slated to appear later on this season. And she wields not one, but two lightsabers.

However, Carlin reckons that this would simply be too easy for The Mandalorian‘s story, which is one of constant detours and setbacks. If a powered-up Jedi like Ahsoka were to drop into the narrative, it would stretch disbelief to not have her simply solve every single obstacle in Mando’s way… which leads him to believe that it will be the titular Mandalorian who has to take down Gideon.
