Saturday Night Live: Kate McKinnon’s Silent Tribute to RBG Is Making People Emotional
I’m not crying, you’re crying. During last night’s season premiere of Saturday Night Live, Kate McKinnon made a brief, yet poignant appearance as the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

As the camera pulled away from the set following “Weekend Update,” McKinnon, seated in the audience dressed as Ginsburg, turned to the audience and placed her hand over her heart, nodding solemnly. The frame then dissolved to a picture of RBG’s notorious robes and glasses alongside the words “Rest In Power.”

Watch the clip below:

McKinnon played Justice Ginsburg on Saturday Night Live for years, often appearing as a guest on “Weekend Update” to give her take on the week’s news and to throw insults toward her colleagues on the bench and in Washington, dubbed her patented “Gins-burns.” McKinnon’s Ginsburg was always read to dance or, in one of last season’s SNL At Home episodes, even host a workout segment using small household objects in place of a gym.

“For so many of us, Justice Ginsburg was a real-life superhero: a beacon of hope, a warrior for justice, a robed crusader who saved the day time and again,” McKinnon said in a statement to People following the passing of Justice Ginsburg last month. “Playing her on SNL was a profound joy because I could always feel the overwhelming love and gratitude that the audience had for her. It was one of the great honors of my life to meet Justice Ginsburg, to shake her hand, and to thank her for her lifetime of service to this country.”

Just as viewers reacted to Maya Rudolph’s latest SNL appearance as Kamala Harris with unfettered glee, they also took to Twitter to share this emotional moment. “Kate McKinnon as RBG one last time,” one user tweeted. “This is such a lovely way to do it.”

Another expressed her gratitude for both McKinnon and Justice Ginsburg, writing, “Kate McKinnon and SNL’s tribute to Ruth Bader Ginsburg was perfect. Thank you for everything, Justice Ginsburg. I promise we will continue the fight.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
