Here’s What Might Have Happened if Darth Vader Actually Got the Death Star Plans
The book has officially closed on the most recent Star Wars trilogy and the long-running Skywalker Saga, with fan opinion pretty divided on how it all ended. But certain corners of the fandom are still focused on Rogue One, the 2016 prequel to the very first Star Wars movie, and one of the only films in the franchise to be released in the 21st Century to near-universal acclaim.

On its surface, Rogue One should never have worked, merely because the audience already knew exactly how it would end. The plot hinged around a ragtag group of Rebel Alliance freedom fighters and their mission to obtain the top-secret plans to the Death Star. These plans were in Princess Leia’s possession at the outset of the original trilogy, so we know they were successful — but the film was surprising in how much it made viewers care for these characters.

Over on the Star Wars Theory YouTube channel, however, an entirely different outcome to that story is being explored. What if Darth Vader managed to grab the Death Star plans back from the rebels at the end of the movie? Well, for one thing, it would probably negate the entirety of what happens in A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, as the plans would never have hidden the plans in her R2D2 and sent the droids hurtling down to Tatooine where they would inevitably encounter young hero Luke Skywalker.

This theory posits an alternate continuity to the series, which would involve Leia seeking counsel from her father, Bail Organa, who would contact Obi-Wan Kenobi, prompting him to come out of hiding to seek out Luke and begin his Jedi training.
