6 Drinks That Deliver Sustained Energy for All-Day Movement

6 Drinks That Deliver Sustained Energy for All-Day Movement
Hydration can make or break all aspects of performance, regardless of how you define “performance,” or where it’s needed.

After all, even endless hours of Zoom calls still require a high level of attention, focus, and energy.

While water is always a great option to stay hydrated and energized, sometimes you need a bit more oomph—maybe a little jolt of caffeine, possibly some nutritionally dense calories—to keep your muscles and your brain fueled for whatever comes next, be it an all-day webinar or workout session.

Whatever you’re choosing to stay hydrated with, just make sure you’re first staying hydrated.

“It is important to keep hydrated for health,” says Stella Volpe, Ph.D., R.D., a nutrition professor at Virginia Tech. “Even if you are working in front of a computer, you still need to stay hydrated.”

Remember, too, when you think abut hydration and energy, “research supports adequate hydration is for both optimal cognitive and physical performance, with just a 2% fluid loss being linked to difficulty concentrating, says sports dietitian Kelly Jones, M.S., R.D., C.S.S.D., of Kelly Jones Nutrition.

Even minor dehydration can affect physical and cognitive performance, as well as your overall health. If you think of your body as a pool of water that your cells swim around in, you want an abundance of fluid for them to operate.

Dehydration reduces the amount of fluid circulating in your bloodstream. This means that your cells have a tougher time doing their jobs and that can affect larger systems within your body. Your heart may have to work harder, which limits your body’s ability to cool itself, which prematurely fatigues your muscles. And then, boom, you have no energy.

These six drinks have helped me fuel my performance, whether that means inside the gym, on the tennis courts, or just endless hours of zoom calls. Hopefully they’ll give you a boost too.

1

Chocolate 26G Protein Shake

Core Power
target.com

With 26 grams of protein and just 8 grams of sugar, this is a go-to for when you are looking for a quality source of protein, which is from dairy in this product, along with just a small amount of carbs.
While I’m partial to chocolate, it comes in a variety of flavors depending on your preference.  And while it tastes best when chilled, it’s super convenient in that it doesn’t need to be refrigerated until opened, making it great for a road trip, your gym bag or anywhere else a fridge might not quite be an option.

2

Kombucha + Energy

Health-Ade

Kombucha has certainly been on a serious popularity curve and for good reason.
Fermented foods, like kombucha, and many others, can help feed those healthy gut bacteria that are crucial for health, immunity, regularity and, really, everything.
Health-Ade kicked it up a notch and added guarana, a source of caffeine, in their PLUS energy ‘buch, to give you that pick you up you may need.  With 120 mg of caffeine per bottle, that’s just a tad more than a traditional cup of coffee (which rings in around 100 mg of caffeine).

3

Siggi’s Strawberry Whole Milk Yogurt Drink

Siggi’s

When in Iceland almost 10 years ago, I distinctly remember thinking how incredible theVyogurt tasted.  It was rich, creamy and nothing like we had in the U.S.
This was close to the start of a brand called Siggi’s, named after the founder, who is Icelandic and had moved to the U.S. to bring their quality yogurt to this country.  At the time my colleagues in Iceland told me I had to look for this particular brand because he was making yogurt authentically.
Fast forward to today and the brand is now mainstream and offering not just incredible yogurts, but a variety of products, including this drinkable yogurt that’s tasty, rich in probiotics, and offers high quality protein with very little sugar.
It’s a perfect complement to a meal or even as a snack between meals that offers just enough energy to satisfy without leaving you uncomfortably full.

4

Effervescent Effer-Energy

Now Foods

These have been a staple in my water bottles before my tennis matches.  First, they offer a bit of flavor to water and, second, they combine electrolytes (needed to replace what’s lost in sweat), which certainly offers sustained energy and performance. The added bit of caffeine (36mg) from Green Tea Leaf Extract lends pep. And they’re also rich in B vitamins, which are important to convert the energy you consume into something that’s useable for the body.

5

Mushroom Coffee with Lion’s Mane

Four Sigma Foods

Love the effects of caffeine but don’t quite want what’s offered in a traditional cup of coffee?  Four Sigmatic has your solution with just 50 mg of caffeine, along with the  scientifically validated goodness of mushrooms.
And, no, you won’t be thinking you’re drinking powdered mushrooms; in fact, once you take a sip, you’ll forget that there’s even mushroom in the name.

6

Matcha Collagen

Vital Proteins

I’ve long been a fan of matcha tea.  A traditional Japanese tea, matcha comes with a laundry list of health benefits—mostly due to the rich source of antioxidants within the product—along with a small dose of caffeine.

This product, contains 50 mg of caffeine for a nice, soothing amount of energy that can give you that little extra edge when needed.

Add in the benefits of collagen peptides (from bovine hide) and we’ve got a winner, winner err… bovine dinner.  The convenience of the travel packs makes it that much easier and always makes my “must have” bag when I travel.  This product also comes in a canister, which is good for when at home and looking for a nice, warm beverage as the temps drop.
